I am Alina, who accidentally fell in love with knitting 9 years ago. I balance my day job with my knitwear blog, The Gift Of Knitting, and create knitting patterns for garments. I can't imagine my life without knitting anymore and I truly hope to preserve this excitement and love for this craft for many many years to come.

Surprising fact: I never thought of myself as a creative person in any way before I picked up a skein of yarn. Endless opportunities the thread of yarn can take. You are in control of the fabric it will become and the shape it is going to take - that fascinates me. And I love that there is nothing in knitting that you can't learn and master. It just all comes to patience and the love for this craft.

I'd like to think of it as a wardrobe staple with the interesting twist. I love finding that balance when the process and the result compliment each other. It should be a piece that you can easily wear in your everyday life, but which also has some points of interest that will keep you engaged in the process of knitting it. I hope I was able to achieve it in the cardigan.

I am very critical of my work and it takes me so much time to come up with the idea that I think is worth putting into life, that when the decision is made, it is a huge relief for me and inspiration to move further.

// A little peek inside the collaboration between YOTH and their current featured designer. We chat with the talented makers, get to know them better, and discover how their collab came to be. //

Tell us a bit about yourself & share one thing that may surprise us about you.
I'm a mom of 4 boys and I started designing while I was working on a (totally unrelated) PhD. I did go on to finish my degree but by then I was enjoying designing so much (and the flexibility to be with my kids) that I ended up going to that full time. I started out designing easy hats for babies and kids but quickly moved on to more complex garments and pieces for all ages. I have been at it for almost 9 years now. I live in the South where the yarn shops are a bit more spread out, but I love traveling to meet up with knitters and friends at various shows or to teach. Fun fact: when I was in 8th grade, I lived in the midwest and wrestled on the boys wrestling team for a season :)

What do you love about knitwear design?
I love the creativity but I also love the MATH. Yup, I am a total math nerd. Grading is like puzzle for me and I love the satisfaction of getting a wide range of sizes figured out even in more complex designs.

How would you describe your new pattern, the Kate sweater, that you designed for us?
I would describe it as intriguingly flattering and wearable on so many body types. It was one of the most challenging designs I've created to date and I think it is much easier to knit than it was to do all that math, I am so proud of how it came out!

How did you approach this design? And, what was difficult to tackle with this project?
Veronika gave me a couple of guidelines and I remember her saying something like "you know, do a complex raglan, do what you're good at" and then I went to google complex raglan because I was not familiar with that term. Ha! Turns out it is indeed something I have done all along I just didn't realize there was a term for it. I really wanted to have a few different stitch patterns going on so I created a huge swatch to experiment before settling on how I wanted to do it. I knit the first few inches of the sweater several times because I kept changing my mind on where I wanted the pieces to go and how the ribbing would bleed into the cables. The most challenging aspect was trying to figure out how to actually write out the pattern. Normally that part is easy for me but this design is a little extraordinary and did not fit neatly into my standard template.

Any tips?
Read ahead but don't overthink it! All standard knitting rules apply! There are some rounds where you just might have to follow along very closely and trust that it is going to turn out alright.YarnOnTheHousehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08418269642619415980noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1112198610773711564.post-31798653733952613832017-10-30T11:11:00.000-07:002017-10-30T11:11:10.368-07:00mill houseSummer is gone, the chill is in the air in this part of the world and our Endless Summer shawl series has arrived. We have a beautiful new pattern named Mill House that we launched today. It's our little treat to you each year: two free shawl patterns to share, knit and gift during the season.

Mill House is an exquisite pairing of our newest cotton/wool blend yarn base, Best Friend, alongside some of our best friends in the yarnie world, Magpie Fibers Swanky Sock and Spincycle Yarns Versus or Dyed in the Wool. The yarns and the knit one below stitch pattern make this wrap a show stopper. Plus, the pattern comes in three sizes, so you can find just the perfect fit. We hope you love this simple wrap as much as we do.
Our newest yarn base to arrive. When we first started this journey, wet behind the ears and not knowing anything, we always knew deep down that we wanted to partner with companies that are doing good things and that we find a personal connection with. This has not changed. We are definitely more seasoned now, and we still believe that choosing partnerships that are meaningful is one of the most important duties that we have as small biz owners.

Cestari Sheep & Wool Company, is one of those such friendships we have made and we are proud to bring you a beautiful new yarn base thoughtfully named Daughter. This base represents the good behind wool farming and yarn producing in America, the roots that family owned businesses create and the love that goes into the pride of work behind a wool made here. Francis, the accomplished and skilled man behind Cestari, along with multi-generations of his own family and staff created this incredible down home yarn base specifically for us and we couldn't be more happier with the outcome.

Daughter is an airy woolen spun 3-ply Rambouillet and Merino wool blend that rides the border of DK weight and Worsted. The simple goodness of this yarn is the slight slub and thick/thin nature of the plies. The Merino that is blended in, provides the YOTH softness you love and the woolen spun nature of the yarn makes it light and wonderful to knit with. It's a hard working yarn that you want to knit cabled sweaters with, hats for days and accessories to keep you warm.

We chose to start a new tradition in colors and skein outputs for this base. The yarn comes in two skein sizes: Daughter, 150g skein that boasts 330 yards, and Daughter Mini, its smaller skein self at 75g and 165 yards. It's available in three beautiful and all time classic colors (for now!): Natural Vanilla, a clean natural cream that's been left undyed, Natural Chocolate, a gorgeous signature Cestari medium heathered undyed brown & Black Truffle, a deep dark solid black that has been dyed by our lovely dyehouse we partner with.

Five of our fabulous Stockists have chosen to be a part of this new yarn launch, so be sure to visit them, support local and squish the new yarn in person: Tolt Yarn & Wool, My Sister Knits, Wool & Honey, Knitting Bee and Brooklyn General.

We hope that you love Daughter as much as we do and thank you for supporting YOTH in all that we do. We feel honored and lucky to be a part of this journey each and every day.
When I first started getting into knitting, like really getting into knitting, Kate Oates happened to fall into my path. It was the very beginning of my blog, Yarn On The House, and she became one of my first indie designers that so sweetly said yes to an interview and giveaway. Fast forward to now and we have managed to keep in touch all of these years. Not only on the knitting front, but also watching each others' families grow and be lucky enough to meet in person on a few occasions to drink wine, reminisce and laugh about the good, the bad and the ugly.

Kate is one of those designers that inspired me from the very beginning and she is still as wonderful and talented at producing wearable timeless garments with thoughtful detailing. Her pieces are ones that I would love to have in my closet... all of them. Only mine would be gray or black. You know me!

I am so very proud of my friend, Kate, for taking the leap into self publishing a real life printed book of her very own. Grown, Sophisticated Sweater Designs from the Maker of Tot Toppers, is a beautiful new book that features 10 raglan-style sweaters with minimal finishing, each inspired by an original Tot Toppers design. I hope that I was in some small way a little bug in her ear when she was deciding between digital only and print, because I knew deep down that this project was going to be magnificent and a collection of knitwear that will be in style for many, many years to come. And, I was right. The photography is stellar, the models are adorable, and Kate's genius garment engineering and tasteful design touch make this book, well, perfect.

YOTH was lucky enough to be included in two of her lovely patterns: the Grace Wrapper, a totally sweet and feminine wrap sweater that is perfect for skirts, long flowy tunics or dresses, and the handsome Scholar Cardigan, a very fitting companion for our unisex brand and yarn. The Grace Wrapper uses our soft Big Sister and the Scholar Cardigan was a perfect match for Father, our work horse of a worsted. And, that's only two of the ten great patterns in this book.

The book is available for pre-order here with some goodies to go along with it, or you can order this beauty as an e-book only, if you are a digital lover!
P.S. I'm headed to Rhinebeck for the very first time. I'll be at the Indie Untangled event inside the Magpie Fibers booth. Be sure to stop by if you are there or just say hello if you see me walking around at the festival. I love meeting my peeps, in real life!
The warm summer days are winding down and the mornings are crisp. It is the perfect time to start a new project and finish just in time to wrap your neck up during the cooler months. We hope you enjoy the first shawl of the series: surf & sand.

During my travels, I visit a lot of wonderful yarn shops and like most knitters, I enjoy finding goodies to bring home. I'm loving all the speckles right now and what I love even more is being able to pair those speckles with our neutral tones. The speckled yarn in this project is a fun skein of Walk Collection Linea in the color Seashells that I picked up at the fabulous StevenBe shop in Minneapolis earlier this year. I knew right away that I wanted to pair this interesting linen, alpaca, silk blend with a skein of our Mother yarn in Shiitake. The two textures of each of the yarns compliment each other exceptionally well and I appreciate the matte finish of our base in a subtle warm taupe next to the multi-colored Linea.

This pattern is not for the faint of heart... it features a slipped stitch pattern worked in an interesting method, a biasing triangular shawl construction, selvedge stitches, half twisted stockinette stitch, and a complicated edging that looks like crochet when you are finished. All worth the work, in my opinion, and if you're not into the scallops, just leave them off.
Other than that... we have a new pattern for you. Thank you to all the knitters out there that we met along our travels recently who have been waiting patiently for this to launch. We hope you enjoy this sweet relaxing knit using our newest Mother yarn, a heavy lace weight that shouldn't scare you off with the word lace. It's a treat to knit and an interesting shape with buttons and eyelets along the edges that make it wearable in a million different ways. I kept debating between ethically sourced genuine or faux fur... back and forth, back and forth. Love the look of real, but honestly, how long are huge fur pom poms going to be on trend? Would I really want to spend the bucks on the authentic stuff? I think I've found the perfect compromise.
To the parents that made our dream a reality,

We are proud to announce our new Mother and Father yarn line, a 100% Domestic Rambouillet sourced from a small gathering of farms west of the Rockies. This is a yarn line that is near and dear to our hearts. It has been a goal even before we began to have something so genuine and true. This is the hard working yarn we have been looking for and so fitting to the parents that have tirelessly believed in us from the start.

Both yarns are an exquisitely spun 3-ply that is round and earthy, yet soft and bouncy to the touch. The new yarn is available in our 12 Raw Palette colors to begin. Mother is a heavy lace weight and yields a nice length of 550 yards in each skein. It will carry you far lengths in a lightweight garment or go the distance in a lace project. Father is the new worsted weight and as the name implies will be strong and hardy. The weight offers 220 yards and is perfect for quick knit accessories or robust garments that love great stitch definition. Our yarns’ namesakes are without a doubt the most relentless people we know, so we think you deserve a yarn as hardworking as them.

This year has been the greatest time of our lives. Traveling across the U.S. with the best team we could possibly put together, our family. Mom and Dad have been here every step of the way. From late nights winding Puppies to long drives in the YOTH mobile to hit our next event. We can’t express our gratitude enough. They will never complain and never allow us to either. They came to America with very little and managed to give us everything we could ever want in life. Told us we could be anything we want in this beautiful country as long as we work hard enough to earn it. This yarn is as dear to our hearts as the couple that inspired it.
Love,
I've spent the last several weeks at home enjoying time with my family, working on some new projects and restocking our yarns. Not to mention, summer is my favorite time of year. The BBQ's, family gatherings, evening runs to avoid the heat, long days, the dogs don't come in muddy, camping trips, bonfires, days at the lake, cold beers on a Friday night... the joys of summertime.

In celebration of the summer and sunshine, I've put together a new Endless Summer shawl series. I'll be releasing two new shawl patterns over the next few weeks for you to enjoy. I love to knit shawls all the time, but especially during the warm months. They make for great travel companions and I tend to have one or five in varying stages and difficulties always on the needles ready to go at a moment's notice. This lovely series of shawls are a gift from us and are available for free! They're simple and could pair well with a sweet chat with an old friend on the porch or a lovely glass of wine without too much thought or concentration involved. Enjoy!
This delightful sun kissed shawl uses one skein of our lovely Little Brother and one skein of Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light or other variegated fingering weight skein to compliment. I don't know about you, but I'm constantly drawn to variegated, striping or fun neon colored yarns, but then I have no idea what I want to do with them. I don't knit socks often, which is a perfect use for such skeins, so I'm always on the look out for great shawl patterns. In my opinion, stripes are the best way of breaking up the spotted, streaked and striped! Our subtle tones of YOTH pair so well with the boldness of the colorful yarns that I love, but don't want an entire sweater out of. I hope that you enjoy this freebie and that it helps you bust through some your stash during your Endless Summer days and nights!

Be on the look out for the next shawl in the series shortly and be sure to tag us in your Endless Summer knitting at #endlesssummershawls. Hugs & stitches!
As a knitter, I know how important it is to see, feel and touch the yarns that we love to knit with. Being an online retailer and only available in shops near the Pacific Northwest makes it difficult for our yarns to get introduced to the many knitting hands out there that would appreciate it. Plus, supporting our local yarn shops is so very important to our community and they are the heartbeats that keep our craft alive, in my opinion. We are so happy to announce two new shops that will be carrying our yarns in the very near future: Knitterly in Petaluma, California, and The Knot House in Frederick, Maryland. Both of these shops are wonderful and we are very honored to be asked to be a part of their line up.

I wanted to share some pics of my recent visit to The Knot House. I'm sad I didn't have a chance to snap pics while in Petaluma, which just means I'll have to take a trip back to Cali sometime soon! And, if you haven't had a chance to visit either of these shops yet, you should. Maybe you could stop in while I'm back in Frederick, June 16th, during our launch of our yarns there!
Let's just say that The Knot House stole a little piece of my heart while I was there, and I can't wait to be back. Visit with me the evening of June 16th at The Knot House. I will be teaching a cool new class, Veronika's Knitting Secrets, and you will have first dibs at the goodies I'm bringing along. Call the shop to put your name on the list and find out the details. Cost is $25.

And, if you can't make it there, we'll also be at the Squam Market on June 6th, and Gauge + Tension in Brooklyn, NY, during the weekend of June 20th. Lots of exciting events coming up! Keep up to date on our events page. We're adding new spots all the time!
My father and I have been on the road now for 3 weeks and I can honestly say that I'm still excited for our next stops. Don't get me wrong, I'm missing my family, the ones who aren't with us, my dogs and I think most importantly, my shower. There's something about showering in your own space, but I'm still giddy to get to our next yarn shop for a trunk show. We've made one big loop around the US and it's been an adventure. I've met some amazing people and seen some wonderful shops. We have lots of news when I get back to announce and a lot of fun projects underway already. That just seems to happen when you're around like minded knitters!

For now, come see our yarns and Dad and me in real life at Yarnology in Winona, MN, this Wednesday evening from 5-8pm or at Colorful Yarns in Centennial, CO, on Friday from 2-6pm. We'll have Puppies! Not many, but you maybe able to snag one for yourself if you come early! We will also have samples of the Number Collection and lots of choices in both Big Sister and Little Brother to choose from. Or, just come to say hi! I love meeting my fellow knitting friends in person.

We arrived safe and sound in Pasadena a few days ago. Our trip down from Washington has been a smooth one thus far and we're loving the weather in So Cal right now. It was our first day at the VKL Pasadena show this evening, for a little market preview. It was a wonderful time and lovely meeting new folks and seeing beloved familiar faces.

The beautiful and talented Kathy Cadigan has come along for part of the adventure and is here shooting some footage for a neat little project we have brewing and she's been fantastic at forcing us to slow down and take some pictures (and posting them for us!), so our knitting friends everywhere can see them. Hence the great pic above.

Also, Little Brother and the YOTH tech team have done it again! If you aren't going to be able to make it to VKL this time or one of our events in the near future, you can live vicariously through other shoppers by watching our current lifestream.
We might be coming to a LYS or event near you. We've been busy little bees getting ready for our next big trip. We are headed to Stash in Corvalis, then down to Knitterly in Petaluma, followed by Unwind in Burbank, in less than two weeks on our way to the new Vogue Knitting Live in Pasadena. We'll have lots of yarn in our palette colors, exclusive Puppies that we only sell at shows and events, printed Number Collection patterns and unique new goodies that we've been finding and sourcing for you. The west coast won't be the end of our far-reaching trip; we'll be headed to Nashville for Stitches South right after VKL and then over to The Knot House for a unique indie pop up shop during the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival. Check out our events page for details, dates and locations. There are new stops added frequently. We can't wait to meet and visit with everyone in person. That's the best part for us.
Gudrun Johnston just released a stunning new pattern, Véronique, with innovative construction and striking details. It uses our Big Sister yarn and is a beauty. Gudrun just posted a KAL thread in her fabulous Ravelry group. Check it out if you are interested in joining. I'm definitely planning to knit myself one. It has "V's" running down the center panel!
We were so thrilled to receive such a warm welcome at Stitches West and we've been busy restocking and updating our YOTH Yarns page since. The new Fresh Palette is up and available online now, plus we've restocked some of the ever popular neutral Raw Palette colors. If we're still out of stock on some of your favorites, more is on its way, we promise!

In other really great news, a friend and fellow designer, Kate Oates, has released a brand new sweater pattern happily named Big Sister. The length of this sweater, simple elements and thoughtful design touches make this a new favorite. This open front cardi is seriously so me, and I can't wait to cast on! Join us for a KAL with this lovely sweater in the month of April! Details will be posted in our Ravelry group soon.
By the way, we've also added some new links to our site: Marketplace, where we will be adding all sorts of sweet knick knacks that are not just yarn, Events, a calendar of all our next stops, so you can come meet us in person, & Errata for pattern goof-ups that just plain happen, but you need to know about.
We had such an amazing time in California and the Stitches West event. It was fun to meet everyone in person, chat with folks about what they are knitting and what fun things they were buying. It was also great to see all the other lovely vendors and friends that were there. Thank you so much to everyone who stopped by our booth, supported our brand, and sent us lots of love even after the event.

The bad news is that Stitches has cleaned out our stock! The good news is that we had 5 big boxes of yarn sitting on our doorstep when we got home. We've added the new yarn in and if you are one of the folks waiting on some Raw Palette colors, I would recommend hopping over to the shop and seeing if we have what you want available. We've also sent a large order to our dyehouse since being home and they are working hard on restocking the remaining colors as quickly as possible. Thank you for being patient with us while we get refilled.

Just an update on the Fresh Palette, we are not quite ready to launch those online. If you visited our booth this past weekend, you had a chance to see the colors in person; however, we do not have our photography ready yet for online purchasing and there are a final few blues and greens that are getting some color tweaking to be just right. Plus, I have a fun KAL and beautiful new sweater pattern by a friend of mine that we will be debuting with the launch. It'll be worth the wait, I promise!

And, last but not least, the Number Collection. We released and introduced our first knitwear collection at Stitches West. We were so thrilled to have received such a loving reception and I'm happy to say that the collection is now available online to purchase on Ravelry. There's even a bunch of little KAL's that have popped up in our YarnOnTheHouse group. I need to join in and knit 004, because we could use a try on sample for our next two shows in April, VKL Pasadena & Stitches South in Nashville. Here's some eye candy from the Collection...
It'll be interesting to see which patterns are favorites on Rav. There were definitely two that stood out at Stitches: 002 & 005, and I know which are my two favorites: 001 & 006. Which ones do you like?
This will be my first time. Little Brother and I, along with family and friends, will be vendors and have our own space at Stitches West this year, booths 1040, 1042, 1139 & 1141 (all in one location, check out the map for more info). It should be a really good time! We're bringing what my mom likes to call puppies... our gradient sticks. When we first dyed them up, she said that they're just like puppies, because you don't want them to leave home! In addition to the one-of-kind hand dyed skeins and gradients, we will have all of our Raw and Fresh Palette yarns along, a bunch of knitted samples, lots of little chachkas that you are going to swoon over, plus the debut of our Number Collection, and wait for it, wait... Shannon Cook and Jane Richmond are coming to our booth and doing book signings! I'm so excited, I can hardly stand it. Stop by to visit with the ladies, snag a copy of their beautiful new Seasonless Mini Collection and get autographs:
We'll also have lots of entertaining and obnoxious gizmos along for the ride. I don't want to give away all the surprises, let's just say a little bit of Vegas, and Little Bro is working on setting up his GoPro and streaming a live feed for those you unfortunates who are unable to attend (so sad!). No promises, but check back to see if he can make it happen. We'll also have a Ravelry stand with two IPads for your convenience. I know how helpful it is to look up patterns on a bigger screen when you need some info. Or, you can just come by to say hi and kick up your feet on our loveseat! Here's a sneak peek to entice.
